The kitchen is the heart of the home. It's a place to gather, cook, eat, laugh, play bills & do homework. When space is limited, it takes smart planning to create a multi-functional and aesthetically appealing kitchen. Here's how to make the most of the space you have.

1. Donate

Do you actually use ALL the pots and pans stored in the cupboard? Go through all your dishes, pots, pans, blenders and other small appliances. If you haven't used them within the last year, its time to say goodbye. You'll be saving yourself the clutter, and someone else will get a better use out of it.

2. Find Beautiful Cleaning Tools

These items don't cost much, but they add a softer look while also getting the job done.

3. Live the Island Life

A kitchen island is a versatile tool for almost any space- even the tiniest apartments!
Whether you choose a larger center-of-the-room style piece of a small butcher-block number, these additions create more counter space, and add storage, all in one piece.

4. Light it Up

If your kitchen is dedicated to getting things done and starting your day, invest in cool lighting- the kind that washed everything in a bright, sunlit glow. A refreshing, cooler light wakes us up and creates an invigorating feeling.

5. Keep it alive

Every room deserves a plant. Not only do they look good, but they also improve the quality of the air around them. No natural light in your kitchen? Or perhaps you don't have a green-thumb? Succulents are great, and almost impossible to kill.

6. Clear the Counters

If the kitchen is already small, the junk sitting on the counters isn't helping. Try only pulling out your small appliances when you need them, and neatly placing them back on the shelf when you're finished. If you have decor filling counter space, it's time to find it a new home and only keep out what's essential.

Tip: If you have pets, make sure to check the toxicity of your plants. Some animals are even allergic to certain plants.

No matter how uniquely challenging your space might be, there are solutions waiting for you to find them!
